Google does not rank websites. It ranks individual pages based on whether they genuinely answer what a person searched for. That single fact explains why beautiful sites sit invisible while ugly ones get traffic. Here is how I build websites that rank — the same checklist I run on every project.
1. Match the search intent, not the keyword
Before writing a single line of code, the question is: what is the person typing this query actually trying to do? Someone searching 'freelance web developer Delhi' wants to hire someone, not read a history of web development. Your page must make the answer obvious within seconds.
I structure every page around one intent: a clear headline that mirrors the search, a supporting subheading, and a call to action that matches the next step the person wants to take.
2. Speed is a ranking signal — and a conversion signal
Google measures Core Web Vitals directly. A site that loads in under two seconds keeps visitors; one that takes five seconds loses half of them before they read a word. Speed is cheapest to build in from day one and expensive to retrofit.
The practical rules: ship minimal JavaScript, compress images, use a content delivery network, and render real HTML on the server so Google sees content immediately instead of waiting for scripts to run.
3. Give Google structured data, not just text
Search engines increasingly understand the world as entities — people, businesses, services, places. Schema.org markup tells Google exactly what your page is about in a machine-readable format, which powers rich results and AI-answer citations.
On every site I build, I include Schema.org markup for the business or person, the services offered, breadcrumbs, and contact details — including a consistent name, address, and phone number that match the profiles elsewhere on the web.
4. Internal linking and clean structure
Every page should be reachable within two or three clicks, and each page should target one topic. A logical structure with internal links distributes ranking authority across your site and helps Google understand which pages matter most.
Essentials that are routinely skipped: an XML sitemap submitted to Google, a robots.txt file, canonical tags so each page has one authoritative URL, and descriptive page titles instead of 'Home' or 'About'.
5. Content that earns the ranking
No technical trick compensates for thin content. Articles and pages that answer real questions in detail — like the one you are reading — are what build long-term traffic. The formula is honesty: write the specific answer a searcher needs, structured with clear headings, and update it when it goes stale.
6. Local SEO for Delhi businesses
For a business serving a city, local search is the fastest win available. A free Google Business Profile with a name, address, phone number, and website link can put you in the local map results within weeks — ahead of competitors who have spent years on national keywords.
The key is consistency: the exact same business details must appear on your website, your Google profile, and your social profiles. Inconsistency confuses the entity and suppresses rankings.
Getting found in AI answers
Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT now answer many questions directly, and they cite sources. The sites they cite are the ones with clear structure, machine-readable data, and genuinely useful content. This is why I treat Answer Engine Optimization as part of building, not an add-on.
